Roses are… yummy

Standard

As the summer is slowly coming to an end we can still enjoy some of the beautiful flowers out there with roses being one of my favorites. I’ve seen this edible rose idea being done with apple slices instead of ham which results in deliciously colored tea roses. However I needed to make this a lunch meal, complete with protein. Therefore pretty pink ham was the choice of petals we went with. We started with a can of handy refrigerated croissant dough. We rolled in out as a whole piece and sliced lengthwise into strips. Then lined each one with a few thin slices of delicious Polish ham and rolled them up into flower buds. We covered them with the aluminum foil for he first half of the bake time and baked it a smidge longer than it stated on the package, to make sure he centers were cooked through. We arranged our roses on a bed of spinach, which made a colorful, healthy and appetizing composition. This magical garden disappeared without a trace, including the ever disliked dark greens a.k.a. rose leaves. A rose is not as pretty without its leaves! Stop and smell the roses! You can eat them too.

Pirates’ pet parrot!

Ahoy Mateys! The kids love to play dress ups and “Pirates” is a frequent theme. To go long with that I made up an easy but super healthy breakfast. I used a homemade pancake for the belly, orange for the head, strawberries for the feathers, clementines for the beak and claws and a grape for the eye. I’m sure once you can let your imagination soar the end result can be even more colorful.  The concept is simple but the kids absolutely adored it! Aye, aye Captain!
